Michael was invited to take part in the prestigious 25 hours of Thunder Hill. Regarded as one of the most challenging endurance races the world over, this event attracts drivers and teams from across the globe seeking a challenge. Operated by the National Auto Sport Association, the 25 hours of Thunder hill has been featured in a documentary and media coverage worldwide.

Driving for Concierge Racing, Michael was thrilled to take part in the event. 84 cars were entered into this years running, providing a constant challenge for the drivers on the track. Michael relished this aspect of the race. “I was always racing somebody. There was no time to get bored!” There is little doubt of that, as the traffic was just one of many challenges faced by Michael and his team. During his stint, the car lost a wheel and suffered from a cracked header. The team was nonetheless able to recover, placing fifth the EO class.

Michael relished the opportunity to experience racing at night, with only the aid of headlights to illuminate the winding 15 turn layout at Thunder Hill Raceway Park. The challenges, and the size and scope of the event, made the 25 hours of Thunder Hill a memorable chapter in Michael’s career.

With the help of the Formula One hopeful USF1 team, Michael was able to test at the historic Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire, England. Long a host site on the Formula One circuit, Silverstone is regarded as one of the premier road racing facilities in the world. Michael was invited as a part of the USF1 team’s driver development program. The experience was highly professional. 25 crew and two trailers arrived for the test, including a spare car specifically for Michael.

Driving in unfamiliar equipment on a new circuit, Michael showed impressively. Through 30 laps on the 17 turn, 3.2 mile course, he came within 1.8 seconds of Superleague Formula regular Duncan Tappy. Michael came away from the test pleased with his performance and eager to return to Europe to further his racing career.

Michael got the opportunity to test drive a Le Mans winning Porsche prepared by The Racers Group (TRG). The event was chronicled by the local ABC affiliate and can be viewed here. TRG has been a highly successful sports car team since its inception in 1995, including wins at the prestigious 24 hours of Daytona and 24 hours of Le Mans. The team currently fields cars in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series, as well as a car for Bobby Labonte in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Team owner Kevin Buckler has stated that it is his intention to help Michael enter professional racing, and this test is just one step on that path.

Running in conjunction with the Indy Racing League, Michael took part in the Jim Russell racing series race at Infineon Raceway. The challenging 2.2 mile, 12 turn road course is set in the middle of California wine country, and has been the site of racing at the highest level since it opened in 1968. It is a challenge that Michael is well familiar with, as the native Californian lists Infineon as one of his two home tracks along with Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Michael’s weekend got started with a solid seventh place showing in qualifying, giving him high hopes for the race to come. The race itself got off to an inauspicious start, as Michael got collected in a wreck that started further ahead in the field. After a lengthy pit stop to repair a damaged front wing, Michael returned to the track and quickly was lapping at the same pace as the leaders.  The day ended with a strong recovery as Michael came home fifth after being a lap behind the leaders following the repairs. Unfortunately the results did not equal Michael’s pace, as he was able to run with those at the front of the grid throughout the race.

Michael was dominant in his most recent Skip Barber outings at Laguna Seca, finishing first twice and second an additional two times in the four races he competed in. Racing on what he considers one of his two home tracks, Michael was quickly in control at the front of the field. He was completely in control in each of his two wins, leading from the drop of the green flag until the checkered flag flew. In the other two races, Michael led all but the final three corners of each, finishing a strong second place.
